NEW! Monthly printing, knitting and dyeing workshops at Doodle

Due to popular demand, our Printing and Dyeing Workshops with Creative Arts Graduate, Nicole Line, are BACK! And this time we’ve thrown in some knitting workshops to boot.

On the third Monday of the month, you will have the opportunity to make jewellery, upcycle old clothes, make presents for friends or just have fun in this new series of workshops.

Below is an overview of the workshops, what each one entails and a list of what is or isn’t provided. Spaces are limited so do book well in advance to secure your spot – the last series was a complete sell-out.

Screen Printing: £18pp / 2 hours 
Monday 16 February, 7.30pm

Screen printing is a versatile process that allows you to experiment with exciting and expressive techniques such as creating your own stencils to print with. In this hands on class you will be shown practical ways to implement your ideas. We will be exploring the building of colour onto sample prints and pushing boundaries within your designs.

This workshop is aimed at beginners through to experienced printers. Nicole will guide you though each process, resulting in a final print onto a bag, item of clothing or cloth.

Preparation before the workshop 
Stencils: You are welcome to prepare your stencils at home to allow more time for printing.
Images: Bring any images along to the workshop which has inspired you.
Cloth: Bring your own items to up-cycle; t-shirts, fabric, napkins, aprons. See what you have at home! All fabrics should be natural; cottons, linens, silks…
NB: Due to table space, please do not bring large table cloths to print onto.

Finger Knitting: £15pp / 2 hours
Monday 16th March, 7.30pm

During this workshop, you will be shown how to make yarn from your unwanted t-shirts. You will be able to turn your old t-shirts into chunky accessories, such as bracelets and necklaces. A selection of yarns and unusual threads such as silicone cord and rope will be provided.

This workshop is aimed at beginners to experienced finger knitters!

Nicole will guide you through each process resulting in a selection of funky jewellery.

Preparation before the workshop 
T-shirts: Make sure the clothing you bring has a slight stretch in the fabric making it easier to finger knit & bring up to 3+ items of clothing with you.
Yarns: If you have any interesting threads, yarns or chains at home, bring them along to the workshop.

Mono printing: £15pp / 2 hours 
Monday 20th April, 7.30pm

During this workshop we will be testing your drawing skills! (Don’t worry, tracing is allowed)

You are required to design several drawings onto paper and transfer this onto cloth or card by applying pressure onto the printing plate. The workshop will allow you to discover ways of transferring your images onto cloth and card by drawing into the inks.

This workshop is aimed at beginners through to experienced printers. Nicole will guide you though each process, resulting in final prints onto cloth and card.

Preparation before the workshop 
Stencils: You are welcome to prepare drawings and stencils to allow more time for printing
Images: Bring any images along to the workshop which you are keen to take inspiration from; magazines, books, postcards…

NB: If you are keen to create a number of cards please provide your own collection, 4 sheets of card will be provided for each printer.

Heat press printing: £25pp / 2 hours 
Monday 15th May, 7.30pm

The heat press is a large and very hot iron which heats up to 200 degrees. During this workshop you will be making your own colourful disperse paper dyes and transferring this onto cloth, trapping flat objects such as lace and your hand cut stencils.

This workshop is aimed at beginners through to experienced printers. Nicole will guide you though each process, resulting in a final designs onto cloth.

Preparation before the workshop 
Cloth: For this workshop the disperse papers will only work on synthetic fabrics, polyester and nylons… Do you have a scarf or top which is synthetic?
Images: Gather any images together which you can get inspiration from
Objects: Do you have any interesting flat objects at home? Bring it in and try it out on the heat press!

Indigo Dyeing: £15pp / 2 hours
Monday 15th June, 7.30pm

Using the Japanese shibori techniques you will be; tying, pleating, scrunching, folding, knotting your fabrics, changing the natural shapes of the cloth. The indigo allows instant results leaving a beautiful blue shade on your cloth once dipped into the dye.

This workshop is aimed at beginners to experienced Indigo Dyers! Nicole will guide you through each process resulting in a selection of quirky designs.

Preparation before the workshop 
Final pieces: Bring your own items to indigo; t-shirts, fabric, napkins, aprons…See what you have at home or in the local charity shop! Bring up to 4 items of clothing with you to dip into the indigo.
Fabrics: If you are wanting to explore other fabrics for sampling cottons, linens, silks work best.

NB: Please do not bring large items to indigo such as large table cloths and duvet sheets

Lino printing:  £15pp / 2 hours 
Monday 20th July, 7.30pm


 

 

 

 

 

Using the lino cutter you will be carving your designs from sheets of lino which will be provided. Once the lino is carved and ready to go, you will be printing your designs onto cloth and card using a range of colours.

Nicole will guide you though each process, resulting in a final print onto a bag, item of clothing, cloth or card. This workshop is aimed at beginners through to experienced printers.

Preparation before the workshop 
Images: Due to the amount of time we have, it is advised to plan your images ready to be carved into the lino. Keep your designs simple using interesting shapes and sizes.
Cloth: Calico fabric and card will be provided, but see what things you have at home to up-cycle; old cushion covers, t-shirts & tops, napkins, aprons… keep your fabric natural; cottons, linens, silks!

Tie-Dyeing: £15pp / 2 hours
Monday 17th August, 7.30pm

Using dylon dyes we will be transforming your clothing into colourful pieces ready for the summer! Drawing with dyes onto cloth and dipping into buckets of dye creating unusual and wacky patterns by tying, folding, pleating and scrunching the cloth

This workshop is aimed at beginners to experienced Tie Dyers! Nicole will guide you through each process resulting in a selection of interesting designs.

French Knitting: £15pp / 2 hours 
Monday 21st September, 7.30pm

Using the dolly’s and materials provided you will be french knitting tubes to be tuned into quirky accessories and making yarn from wanted clothing.

FYI t-shirts work best!

This workshop is aimed at beginners to experienced French knitters! Nicole will guide you through each process resulting in a selection of funky jewellery.

Preparation before the workshop 
T-shirts: Dig deep in your wardrobes and draws! Bring t-shirts that have a slight stretch in the fabric making it easer to French Knit whilst using the dolly.
Yarns: See what interesting threads an cords you have at home.

Up-cycling your clothes!: £25pp / 2 hours
Monday 19th October, 7.30pm

For this workshop you are required to provide your own items to up-cycle. Your task is to find interesting clothing and fabric from your local charity shop or car boot sale. Please bring a couple of items to transform, such as a shirt, jumper, dress, scarf or apron…. have a good look in your wardrobe too!

Nicole will be providing her Heat Press for this workshop – a large and very hot iron which heats up to 200 degrees. You will have the chance to experiment with textile metallic foiling and flocking.

Foiling: Transferring metallic film to fabric using the heat press.This can be applied using foil adhesive (a bit like glue) painting your design directly onto your item of clothing or foil using a paint brush. Placing the metallic foiling on top of your adhesive, then popping this under the heat press for 20 seconds, leaving your image looking shiny!

Flocking: Is raised velvet. To transfer this onto your item of clothing using the same technique as ‘foiling’. Painting adhesive directly onto your piece of fabric and placing under the heat press for 20 – 30 seconds.

To begin with you will be sampling the techniques onto calico which is provided by Nicole, then printing onto your final piece.

Washing instructions: Wash by hand in cold or lukewarm water so that your deigns last! Ironing instructions: Turn clothing inside out and iron on the reverse side, low heat & no steam.

Fabrics: Search for interesting fabrics, such as leather and suede, cottons, linens, silks!
Images: Look for patterns and bring them along to the workshop to help spark ideas with your designs.
Card: You are able to heat press onto card, if you are wanting to create a few Christmas cards please provide your own selection.

Block printing: £15pp / 2 hours 
Monday 16th November, 7.30pm

Your first task is to draw two images onto paper (tracing is allowed). Once you have passed the first hurdle, the next step is to carve into the poly block!

You will be experimenting with colour and transferring this onto cloth creating a range of samples. We love to up-cycle so see what you have at home, such as old shirts and napkins!

Visit your local charity shop or car boot sale and search for interesting things to print onto (Battersea Boot on a Sunday afternoon is perfect for cheap cloths)

This workshop is aimed at beginners through to experienced printers. Nicole will guide you though each process, resulting in a final print onto a bag, item of clothing or cloth.

Preparation before the workshop 
Clothing: Find interesting items to print onto, shirts, T’s, napkins…
Fabric: Although calico fabric will be provided, bring in old scraps of patterned fabric!
Images: Have a think about what you might print, gather images for inspiration

Printing and dyeing workshops at the Doodle BarOver the coming weeks, Creative Arts graduate Nicole Line will bring a travelling studio to Doodle and will be hosting a series of printing and dyeing workshops in the bar.

The workshops are a great opportunity to learn a variety of printing and dyeing techniques in a fun and relaxed environment..i.e with a cocktail in hand!

Monday 20th October: Screen Printing
You will have the chance to create stencils and use the silk-screens provided, creating your own prints using pigments and binder. Please wear suitable clothing and bring items from home to print onto – tea towels, pillow covers, aprons, t-shirts, tote bags.

Monday 17th November – Mono Printing
Using flat objects such as lace and feathers you will be mark making and drawing into the paint creating samples for your sketchbooks. Bring any interesting fabrics from home to print onto and wear suitable clothing.
